(copy from journal - day 2 part two NC) Day Two, Part Two(9:31pm) We ended up driving down to downtown Charlotte today. Couldn't really figure out anything else to do. I mean, we discovered that about 70 miles from here are the emerald mines seen on the "Cash and Treasures" show on The Travel Channel and had we planned in advance, I SO would have done that, but an hour and 20 minute drive one way when it was already 1pm..? Yeah, not very practical. The day was overcast, so the temperature was pretty nice. I guess it was supposed to be around 90F (32C) or so today but the high was only 81F (27C) instead. And the humidity was low. It only got warmer later in the afternoon when the sun came back out. Not too shabby though. 81F is a break for us and quite a bit cooler than we'd ever expect anywhere near this time of year. Downtown was interesting. There's a lot of construction going on. New buildings, condos and such. They have this neat thing called a "sky walk" where all the buildings are connected to each other through enclosed walkways above the roads. And, there's this whole mall area inside and between the buildings were you can find restaurants, shops and coffee places. { -- three hour delay -- ) 12:06am: Um...I don't know where I was. Heh. We were hanging out with Love's parents and Love's two new nieces and one nephew who are staying over with his parent's tonight. Since the wedding is tomorrow, Love's sister wanted some time to get things finished without keeping up with the kids. So I brought over my DS and the kids were ENTHRALLED. They're all teenagers and were fascinated with the games - especially Nintendogs. It's now midnight and we finally pried it out of their hands and I'm back in my room. Whew! They're good kids but man, they're energetic! Anyway, here's a few shots to tide you over... Here's a random view from around where we are. You can see there's actually a mountain shape in the distance. Wow! And here's a shot I took in downtown Charlotte today. They have this intersection with statues on each corner mounted on top of pillars. It's really weird but cool. I'll post some more shots when I get home. So there you go. A little bit of scenery to hold you over. Meanwhile, I'm going to get comfy and ready for bed. Tomorrow is the wedding itself. I'm acting as unofficial photographer tomorrow since theirs canceled last minute. No, it won't be professional with my camera, but they trust that I know how to take nice shots. So I'll be scurrying around taking photos. They already told me I can go anywhere I want to get shots. We'll see how it works out! Alright, hope everyone's well. I'm off to relax. Night! |

Sleep! (Finally) Apparently what I need to sleep well on my own now is a two hour work out, and to stay up until midnight. I was out once I hit the pillow and slept in until nearly 8:30. I'm not doing too much today and sort of taking the day off. (I am doing lunch out for a review but that barely counts right?) Tomorrow is my belt test and I'm feeling pretty confident about it (especially having such a better night at training than on Tuesday where I could barely walk it seemed much less throw anyone around). Plus the second half of training last night was so breathing oriented it was really relaxing and meditative. I think that also contributed to the "Josh can sleep" bits of yesterday. (copy from journal - day two NC) Day Two Looks like we're free today, so we're going to run around and explore Charlotte, NC. I'm a little frightened that the number one attraction listed on the "Visit Charlotte" website is the Billy Graham library....but I'm trying to ignore that.
Out for now and more later! |

(copy from journal - another charlotte, nc update) Is This October? We walked Love's sister out of the hotel (she and her family came by and we ate a takeout dinner in the little cafeteria area off the lobby) and were shocked to find that when the sun goes down here, so does the temperature.
What the heck is that about? That doesn't happen in Florida! Sun up, sun down - who cares? It's still a steam bath outside. Here? It's 76F (24C) outside right now with like no humidity. So the air isn't heavy or wet or thick and it's downright pleasant outside. Back home, this kind of weather is like October or something. (If we're lucky.)
I even joked that I needed to blog about how nice outside it is so here I am doing just that. Heh. ;)
I'm SO tired. I'm ready to drop. But I thought I'd just do another quick post because, hey, I can! Whoo hoo! Free wireless access rocks.
So, day one of the trip is coming to a close. (Though it feels like it's been TWO days; it feels like when we got up it was yesterday.) I'm not sure what's going on specifically tomorrow, but Saturday of course is the wedding itself. Sunday we turn around and do it all over again. Still, it's been cool seeing actual hills and mountains. Another really weird thing. Florida is as flat as flat can be. Most of the drive looked exactly the same, but we finally hit some mountain-ish bits when we got into South Carolina. We all kept pointing and ooohing and aahhing when the road took dips and curves in front of us.
I've taken some pics but I'm not sure if I'm going to go through the effort of resizing and uploading them while I'm here. I'll probably wait until I get back to make a little travel-progress photo gallery. Though that reminds me I do want to empty my card before the wedding.
Ok, I'm officially babbling at this point because I'm tired. But it's been such a unique day for me that I find myself just rambling to share the experience.
Night all! |

(copy from journal - greetings from NC) OMG FINALLY Holy crap, we're FINALLY here. So despite the fact that google maps said 600 miles and nine hours, it was almost 700 miles and took us eleven hours.
*dies*
I'm so fried right now but I'm here. So greetings from Charlotte, North Carolina! Hopefully off to take a shower (ugh, 11 hours in a car? grimy!) and relax the rest of the evening.
More later. |

(copy from journal - kitties alone three days) Oh Yeah, And.... ...I'm worried about the girls being alone for three days. Even though Rand's coming by twice a day to feed them while we're gone, I worry they'll be lonely. Gracie is such a cuddle cat, she has to follow me around all day and then hang out with us in the evening on the couch, I'm afraid she'll be lonely.
And a lonely Gracie is a destructive Gracie. Did I mention I'm also worried for the apartment itself as well? What are they going to get into three days on their own? *shudder* Oh, I don't even want to think about it! |

(copy from journal - last day before trip) Panic! Tomorrow we'll be on the road. Today I need to pack. I'm convinced I'm going to forget vital stuff. I'm also convinced we're going to be stopping like five hundred times for my stomach. I didn't sleep well last night and the lawn care people mowing outside my window for three hours straight starting at 7:30am this morning didn't help. Love's parents are INSANE and want to be ON THE ROAD at 6AM. WTF? It's only nine hours. Even if we left at like 9am we'd get there around 6pm. 6am means I need to be up around 4am which means really, I shouldn't bother going to sleep. 4am wake-up also means (1) migraine and (2) guaranteed living hell with my stomach. Mornings and my stomach do NOT, EVER go together. Mornings are bad. Even Love who's normally pretty understanding about the limits of my stomach is like, "whatever. this is the time EVERYONE wants to leave." No, not EVERYONE. And why not let them go early then and we'll just meet them in NC? NooooOOooo. Driving up there - even though we're in two cars without a radio or something between us so it's not like we'll be chatting - is part of the "family thing." So stressed about that! Love's sister's photographer apparently canceled. (Why? No idea. Pretty ass though.) So she's asking all of us to help take as many pictures as possible. But I only have a 1gig card. That's 286 photos. Sure it sounds like a lot but I wanted to be able to take video and stuff too. (Like do a vlog while I'm there or take footage during the drive.) So...bah. I need a larger memory card and I need it tonight, but I don't have the cash for one. Just...ACK. I'm trying to think it's only a few days. It'll be fine. We'll have fun. It'll be nice to go away somewhere. And that's all probably true. But right now, I'm just focused on the stuff that isn't fine and isn't fun. And I'm freaking out. Once again though, positive energy, good vibes and well-wishes for a safe trip are greatly appreciated. (And good thoughts about an easy few stomach days are even more appreciated as well.) Probably see you on the flip side. |

Just Another Day in the Salt Mines Hopefully by the end of this week I'll have some more photoshoots set up. I'll also have made a good dent in the packing for the impending move as well as 7th kyu aikikai (again, I am a little irritated as one of my fellow students is testing to jump two ranks which I am sure I could have done if anyone asked me to but now it is too late *sigh*). I may or may not be sleeping decently. Current Music: Stories of Old - Depeche Mode |

The Intro Post Hi all! This is an intro post :D. Name (you wish to be known as): Ineptshieldmaid. Will answer to Inept or Shieldmaid, but not IS. (I refuse to answer to a third-person conjugation, that's just silly.) How you heard of told_tales: I found it in mase992's profile. Thanks hon. ;) Favorite Tale: ooh, fine, ask the hard questions why don't you. Can I have two votes? One, premodern, for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and for a modern adaptation, Neil Gaiman's 'Snow, Glass, Apples' in Smoke and MirrorsTale you're most intrigued by: Arthurian legend; Cinderella Favorite hero/ine: *points to icon* Favorite villian: Snow White, in 'Snow, Glass, Apples', although it's hard to tell if she's the heroine or the villain or what. How you became interested in fairy/folk tales: I think it's probably my father's fault. He's certainly to blame for my Gaiman fixation and my thing for twisted fairy tales. I think I found Arthurian legend on my own, and I've always had a mad love of Cinderella. Favorite authors: Neil Gaiman, The Gawain Poet, Terry Pratchett, Tolkien, Lewis, Lewis Caroll, assorted other fantasy authors. A little something about you: I'm in my fourth year of uni, and I study medieval literature. Anything else we should know?: Uhm... no, not that I know of. |

Work, Work, Work! So I've been toiling away today beating Wordpress into submission and playing with themes. I think the new site is a billion times more slick than the old one. Actual content is coming slowly but the actual structure seems to be coming along rather quickly. Thoughts or impressions? Oh and if you have an RSS feed reader you won't have to depend on me to catch updates over there (although I am not sure how often those will be, maybe once a week or something? I dunno). Grrr. As I do every so often, I decided to check the prices on rentals in our area.
Average price to rent a home is $1700 a month. Lowest price I saw was $1030— no pets, of course. Or maybe you can get a one-bedroom condo for that amount. (We are paying $1050 for our 2/2 apartment— they just raised our rent again— and like the place aside from the fact that it's just not big enough and has no external storage. And won't take to baby-proofing well.)
What does $1700 get you? A 4/2, usually.
Oh, and there are some houses for sale in our area* starting to maybe approach the upper limit of our affordability. Foreclosures, natch, with potential problems that we'll have to get appraised.
There are times I really hate this place, and they're usually financial.
*For those of you not around here, you might think that Meadowview/South Sacramento would be a good bet, as it's just north of Rob's work. Trust me, it's not. It's really not. |

Home Now Back from the trip. Driving with a Three-Nearly-Four-Year-Old is a challenge but we managed OK I suppose. We didn't have anywhere near the length of time (or prime days where we wanted to) but it was nice to see everyone that we did. The wedding was a fantastic party and the new cousin enjoys fine whiskeys and Scotch in particular so even though we didn't haul a present across five states (! Plus since they are moving to Oregon as soon as they get back from their honeymoon they'd have to haul it across two) I think we still made a good impression on him. It was nice to see the family as I haven't seen some of them since secert_hippie and I were married or longer. Took many many pictures so at least some should be decent. Other than that I am sleep for crap as I have the house to myself until 29 July when the rest of the little family returns. Current Music: Talk About The Passion - R.E.M. |

Existential Crises for Children. Somebody with more entitlement issues than common sense brought their infant child to a showing of The Dark Knight yesterday. Surprisingly, they had to leave about midway through the movie because the baby wouldn't stop crying. This is not difficult. You have enough money to have a child and to buy a ticket to a movie theater; ergo, you can find some room in your budget to hire a sitter. Now, if traumatizing your child with weighty moral discussions delivered from the sneering, self-inflicted scars of a psychopathic clown is what you were aiming for, I can understand that this was your golden opportunity. But next time, maybe you should just let your child and the sitter sit and watch this clip from Claymation's 1985 Banned TV Special The Adventures of Mark Twain instead: Current Mood: grumpyCurrent Music: Happy Ashtray, "Think About That" |

Two Month Checkup He feels heavier than he is. 13 pounds, two ounces. Right on the chart line, right on schedule. Not on schedule is the enormous height gain. He's 25 inches long, which puts his growth in that respect on a line much steeper than the usual charts. This is also why he's outgrowing clothes so fast. (He's in the 3-6 month clothes already and will soon be in the 6 month clothes for the most part.) His head size is on track too, 80th percentile. (Given his enormous size in other respects, I can't help but feel grateful that his head wasn't in line with the rest of the measurements.) Immunizations today, one shot in his left thigh and two in his right. Red-faced screaming, you betcha. That's an older photo but the idea stands— and his face actually gets redder than that photo. "Sad little tomato" is actually a pretty appropriate nickname. |
